  • OUR HISTORY

    History

We have invested our time, expertise, economic resources earnest commitment to turn our mission into a reality.  Thus far, through the Gary Education Development Foundation, our fundraising efforts have resulted in the establishment of the B.L.E.E.D. Scholarship Fund which was created to award an academic grant annually to an African American male student in the Gary Public School System who exemplifies the qualities of leadership, character and community service and who is in need of financial assistance. The recipients must be accepted into an accredited 4-year college or university and submit a 250 word essay stating educational goals and interest in becoming a future Black Leader.

The scholarship is endowed by donations from the 9 Founding Fathers of the organization and corporate donations from companies such as Roadway Express, Kraft Foods, Procter and Gamble and Enbridge. It is the goal of the organization to build and prepare future leaders through educational assistance and mentorship. We are very proud that the fund has been able to generate an annual scholarship and provide mentorship to the recipients since 1998.

Through the generous support of Enbridge we have established an annual scholarship and internship to a minority engineering student in the Northwest Indiana.  Through this financial support and mentor, our interns have often secure career opportunities in Enbridge and have grown to be mentors and supports of the BLEED scholarship program.

We have expanded our reach to include an annual college preparation symposium for local High School Juniors, seniors and their parents.  The symposium focus on the importance of college, tips of funding, and practical tips on how to succeed in while in college.  Participants at the symposium also have an opportunity to win 3-5 smaller scholarships to cover the cost of books or other out of pocket college related costs.
